New York's electronics recycling law makes it illegal for consumers to throw so-called "E-Waste" in

the garbage. Violators can be fined $100.  The law requires electronics manufacturers to finance a system

of collection and recycling for state residents.  Best Buy stores accept most electronics from consumers for

recycling.  Some at no charge and some for a fee regardless of where the product was purchased. The Salvation Army, Goodwill Industries, and Staples also accept consumer electronics.

The following E-Waste IS NOT accepted in your curbside trash and recycling receptacles. 

 

Computers (including laptops, desktops, tablets and e-readers) including small scale servers (You should erase personal information before recycling.)  Televisions, Cathode ray tubes.  Computer peripherals (including any cable, cord, or wiring accompanying the computer peripheral.)  Monitors, Electronic keyboards, Electronic mice or similar pointing devices, Facsimile machines, document scanners, and printers (only those intended for use with a computer and weighing less than 100 lbs.)  Small electronic equipment (including any cable, cord, or wiring accompanying the small electronic equipment.)  VCRs, Digital video recorders (DVRs), Digital converter boxes, receivers & DVD Players Portable digital music players, Electronic or video game consoles (including handheld)

 

The following are not covered and do not need to be recycled under the E-Waste Law.

 

Any motor vehicle, or any part thereof; camera or video camera; portable or stationary radio; household appliances such as clothes washers, clothes dryers, microwave ovens, ovens, ranges or dishwashers; equipment that is functionally or physically part of a larger piece of equipment intended for use in an industrial, research and development or commercial setting; security or anti-terrorism equipment; monitoring and control instrument or system; thermostat; hand-held transceiver; telephone of any type; portable digital assistant or similar device; calculator; global positioning system (GPS) receiver or similar navigation device; a server other than a small-scale server; a cash register, commercial medical equipment that contains within it a cathode ray tube, a flat panel display or similar video display device, and is not separate from the larger piece of equipment; or other medical devices as that term is defined under the Federal Food, Drug and Cosmetic Act.
